An Invitation to Donors Building the legacy: A sustainable planetary civilization. The 2020 Fund invites donors to join this international philanthropic platform dedicated to accelerating progress toward a sustainable world - environmentally, economically, and socially. At present, donor-advised projects (involving individual, foundation, corporate, and government funders) are being undertaken under the administrative auspices of the King Baudouin (King of Belgium) Foundation, US (KBFUS), an organization committed to supporting the development of effective international philanthropy. A report by Duane Elgin. This 1998-99 study, hosted by Union Theological Seminary, was the first official project of the 2020 Initiative (currently 2020 Fund). It drew from leading research and the input of over 20 respected researchers/commentators to describe the driving adversity and opportunity trends that are causing the evolutionary inflection poin humanity currently faces. Mr. Elgin used this research as input for his book Promise Ahead : A Vision of Hope and Action for Humanity's Future. Donors included: Sam and Mary Mills Family Fund, Vincent and Anne Mai, Deborah Stern The 2020 Global Stakeholder Panel A new strategic global research and communications infrastructure that Is building a new information resource to help guide decision makers into the future Brings together leaders from philanthropy, NGOs, business, and government from all regions of world to crystallize an image of the world we want, and identify the key deliverables for achieving it - i.e. what do we need to achieve by when to have a sustainable world Uses a structured and quantifiable Delphi-like survey methodology Begins to convene leadership organizations who are committed to the goals Establishes new social data, metrics, and reporting capacity to guide decision makers re: stakeholder opinions, investment priorities and actions during the upcoming transition to sustainability Provides widely available new donor education resources - including simplified, well digested statistical data, publications, and presentations/briefings Undertaken in alliance with Environics International, Ltd., Toronto, Canada Donor Circle includes: Sam and Mary Mills Family Fund, International Development and Research Centre, King Baudouin Foundation (Belgium), Mott Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Dow Canada. Participating Major Networks/Organizations include, for example: Civicus, Ashoka, Synergos, Leadership for Environment and Development (LEAD), World Social Forum Organizing Committee, World Economic Forum's Global Leaders for Tomorrow, Business for Social Responsibility, Union of International Associations, World Federation of UN Associations, International Federation of Planned Parenthoods, International Confederation of Trade Unionists, and others. Exploratory Initiative A possible new alliance-based social enterprise designed to achieve a sustainable planetary civilization. [a.k.a. Campaign 2020/ 2020 Global Alliance] A discovery process (including structured interviews) and strategic meetings to further develop the enterprise model, and identify and engage the leadership and organizing dynamic for building a visionary, unifying impetus and infrastructure to ensure we get to a "sustainable" planet. The preliminary organizational concept to be tested: 2020 Global Alliance (name pending branding), a core Alliance of businesses and not-for-profit organizations with leading competencies in constituency/network organizing, research, management, cause/social marketing, traditional and venture capital (philanthropic and commercial), technology, finance, communications, and conferencing capacities needed to "get the job done." Campaign 2020 is the proposed catalytic Kennedy-style "moonshot" global organizing initiative that would be designed, built, and managed by the 2020 Global Alliance - providing new capacity to the movement to achieve sustainability. Builds on key findings from the 2020 Global Stakeholder Panel re: what's needed to achieve critical acceleration to S.D. - globally coordinated initiative involving social marketing to promote SD; social movement organizing/networking; high profile leadership; high profile reporting on SD progress; alliance-building, financing and other capacity-building resources. (See 2020 GSP Highlights Report) The current objective is to test the feasibility/cultivate leadership, and begin development for the global organizing strategy and infrastructure (business model) required.
